Carlo Varela is a senior associate at Markovich Grover. He received his Doctor of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Phi International Honor Society, Nancy F. Atlas Intellectual Property Inn of Court, and Tax Law Society. Before law school, Carlo worked at Med-Psych Administrative Services Inc. for 20 years, first as the director of finance and operations, and later as chief financial officer and partner.
Carlo began his legal career at Brown Sims, where he handled claims under the Defense Base Act, War Hazards Compensation Act, and Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act. His accomplishments include a vigorously contested asbestos claim for death benefits under Section 933(g) that resulted in a complete victory for Employer and Carrier at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Carlo has been published before the Benefits Review Board alongside Markovich Grover President Monica Markovich and Director Krystal Layher.
Between Markovich Grover and the predecessor firm, Carlo worked at Dumas Neel PLLC, handling a range of business dispute matters, including breach of contract, partnership disputes, breach of fiduciary duty, issues related to the corporate practice of medicine, and violations of the Texas Fraudulent Transfers Act.
Carlo is licensed to practice in Texas as well as before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.
